The WWSW Conference has given me a better understanding of the business side of books, but it was at the Intensive that I learned the basics of storytelling and received the one-on-one coaching I needed to write my own.
If you are serious about your work this intensive is a must! With one on one sessions, small critique groups, and short informational courses, I was given the direction I needed to finish a novel I had given up on. The supportive environment, new friends and great food are just an added bonus!
The intensive helped me nail my pitch, polish my proposal and start a promising conversation with an agent!

Location & Lodging
This year’s retreat will be held in the breath-taking Abbey near Piedmont, Okla.
In 1938, a group of Carmelite nuns came to Oklahoma. Due to the expanding growth of the state, the ever-expanding commercial business areas and noise from heavily trafficked roads, the Community relocated to a remote property near Piedmont, OK, in 1985. There the Nuns built a permanent monastery now known as The Abbey.
Today, though the nuns no longer reside at The Abbey, they continue the rhythm of prayer and contemplation according to the example of the first nuns founded by Saint Teresa of Jesus in the 1500’s in Avila, Spain.
Continuing the flow of their purpose, our primary propagation is prayer and healing, directed to serving and evangelizing the world, for the exclusive purpose of advancing the Kingdom of God. At the Abbey, prayer is our primary apostolate and our mission is to pray for the needs of the Church and people in Oklahoma and the world.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to have something written to come to the retreat?
Nope! You’re welcome to attend even if you just have a concept idea and want someone to help them to flesh it out. Bring all your ideas and any research and notes you have on the subject.
I’d like to have help with an article I want to write, is there someone to assist me?
Yes, but you need to know where you want to submit it; for example, writing an article for Parents magazine is very different from writing an article for Guideposts. You’ll be able to get better direction if you’ve thought about your primary markets or magazines you want to write for.
I’ve started a book but I don’t know how to format it. Do I need to figure this out before I can attend the retreat?
No, bring what you have and we’ll help you format your manuscript as well as give you direction on content development.
I’m writing a non-fiction, personal experience book but I’m not sure how to reference quoted material and whether I need permission from people I write about. Would this be a good retreat for me to get help on these details?
Yes, we can help you with that!
I’m writing a devotional book but my friend who read it pointed out a lot of repetition and that some entries are short and some are really long. Can you help me?
Yes, the devotions don’t have to be all the same length, but most publishers suggest that they be similar in length. Too much repetition can make a book drag. We can help you with that.
I’m writing a book but I’ve been told by people who’ve read it that the first chapter drags. How do I make it more compelling?
The first chapter is the hardest working chapter of the book. It’s the foundation that the rest of the book must stand on. We’ll help you make it accomplish everything it needs to do, including setting up your premise.
I’m writing a book but I’m stuck on what I should title it. Do you have any faculty who are good at titles?
We’ll be happy to brainstorm on title ideas for your book. We’ve got some creative title people and published authors who’ve generated many great titles.
I understand that editors and agents want to see a book proposal rather than the whole manuscript. I don’t even know how to get started. Could you show me what needs to be included in the proposal?
We have a special early enrollment session available on Friday afternoon just to give people a jumpstart on their book proposals. With that start, we’ll teach you what needs to be included and help you flesh it out over the weekend.
I want to pitch my book idea at an upcoming writer's conference, but I haven’t ever done it before. Could you help me with that?
Yes, we enjoy helping writers develop their pitch; it’s an important part of finding a publisher or even creating your back-cover copy if you’re self-publishing. By the way, if you’re looking for a great writer’s conference, we recommend WriterCon.
Will there be time to write?
Yes, there will be time for critiquing your work, writing—and fun.
I’m a new fiction writer. Is it worth my time to come to a retreat if I’m just learning?
Absolutely! We’ll work with you no matter what level you’re starting. We have expertise in meeting you where you’re at, whether a novice or an advanced writer.
I’ve written several novels. What can I learn at this retreat?
We believe writers never stop refining their craft. There’s always room to improve. We also enjoy brainstorming characters and plots and help you turn a corner in whatever WIP you’re currently diving into.
I’ve got some great characters in mind but haven’t formed a plot yet. Will this retreat help?
You bet! Sometimes plots come first. Sometimes characters. We have a blast brainstorming ideas so that you can walk away from the retreat with a well-formed idea and hopefully several pages of writing to get you jumpstarted!
